Sample of Chapter One
Know Your God
"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."--I Corinthians 1:18.
This is a believer's guide. If you don't believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, born in the flesh, bore our sins, was crucified, died, was resurrected and is now seated at the right hand of the Father, close the book and find something else to do. (Or if you would like to become a believer and are not sure how, turn to the last page of this book and I will lead you in a simple prayer.)
The only help offered here comes from the Father through the power and blood of Jesus. He is our hope. For a child tormented by the demonic, He is our only hope. If you're not sure that you believe in the demonic, keep reading and I think you'll be convinced. John 8:32 says, "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Trying to use God's power without having a relationship with Him is spiritual shoplifting and very dangerous indeed. See what happened to the Seven sons of Sceva. "A team of itinerant Jews who were traveling from town to town casting out demons planned to experiment by using the name of the Lord Jesus. The incantation they decided on was this: "I adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preached, to come out!" Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish priest, were doing this. But when they tried it on a man possessed by a demon, the demon replied, "I know Jesus and I know Paul, but who are you?" And he leaped on two of them and beat them up, so that they fled out of his house naked and badly injured."--Acts 19:13-16.
I first began my study of deliverance out of need. Desperate need! Once the Lord had finally revealed to me that our son's problem was spiritual (his story is found in chapter 5), I thought we'd have it licked. You know what I mean? Go down to the pastor of our home church, get him and a couple of elders to pray for the kid and slam-bam-thank-you-mam, our problem is history. Wrong! I quickly found that even in Charismatic/Pentecostal circles, deliverance knowledge was very limited or non-existent. I mean really, where's a good exorcist when you need one? So like any dutiful, desperate parent we set out to find help.
The next pastor bluntly told me during prayer time, "Sorry, we don't do demons here." I later found out that he had only recently come to believe in the actual existence of the devil. Now there’s the problem in a nutshell. We've been blinded folks! And getting beaten up for our ignorance. "My people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge." --Hosea 4:6. The word identifies Satan as the destroyer, yet we fail to believe in his existence. The following survey may add some enlightenment to the reasons for our ignorance.
As reported in Christ For The Nations magazine, sociologist Jeffrey Hadden compiled a study of the beliefs of ten thousand Protestant ministers in May 1982. The response from the Ten Thousand mainline pastors was shocking.
1. Was Jesus born of a virgin? Over 50 percent of the pastors said "No."
2. Was Jesus the Son of God? Over 80 percent of the responding ministers said "No."
3. Is the Bible the inspired word of God? Again, over 80 percent said "No."
If the shepherds don't believe, how are they going to lead their flocks? In Matthew 15:14 Jesus warns us, "...they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch." In Ephesians 4:27 we are cautioned, "Neither give place to the devil." There seems no better way to give him "place" than by our ignorance.
Could it be that the enemy doesn't fear the church, because the church does not fear the Lord? The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom--Job 28:28. Not only does the church underestimate the enemy, many of us aren’t trusting God’s truth either. "Woe to you experts in religion! For you hide the truth from the people. You won't accept it for yourselves, and you prevent others from having a chance to believe it"--Luke 11:52. Watch out for the false leaders - and there are many of them around who don't believe that Jesus Christ came to earth as a human being with a body like ours. Such people are against the truth and against Christ."--II John 1:7. Perhaps this is why the church of today is apathetic and impotent. End Sample
